Illustrative example, not a completed project: two AC piping quotes arrive. One lists only the copper's country of origin. The other identifies the equipment, both refrigerant lines, insulation, route and testing. The useful question is which proposal can be checked against what will actually be supplied and installed.
A useful piping quotation connects the model, materials, route, measurement and testing in one reviewable scope.
The equipment determines the requirements
Record the indoor and outdoor model numbers and use the matching installation documents. Pipe diameters, material requirements and route limits must correspond to that equipment. A generic diameter cannot describe every split AC installation.
The referenced Daikin manual illustrates model-specific piping and insulation requirements. Its dimensions should not be copied to unrelated equipment. Ask for the specification applicable to your actual unit.
Make insulation visible in the specification
Request a description of the insulation material, suitable thickness, joint coverage and protection for exposed sections. The referenced manual accounts for temperature and humidity when specifying insulation; the word “insulated” alone leaves too much undefined.
Agree the route and access points before closing ceilings or finishes. Photographs provide a useful record for later maintenance and alterations.
Define what a metre includes
Ask whether the measured quantity is the route length for the pair of pipes or the length of individual pipes. State whether wiring, condensate drainage, supports and covers are included. Separate supply-only pricing from supply and installation.
| Item | Clarification required |
|---|---|
| Pipes | Specification for each line and model |
| Linear metre | Route length or individual pipe length? |
| Insulation | Material, thickness and protection |
| Scope | Supply, installation, testing and exclusions |
Compare evidence, not a country ranking
Product identification and supporting documentation help verify the specified material. Country of origin alone cannot confirm equipment compatibility or installation quality. Treat unmentioned lifting, making-good or finishing work as unresolved scope before authorising the job.
How do you agree quantities and additional lengths?
Identify the route for each system, with a clear measurement start and end. Once the quotation defines its linear metre, use the same method for the estimated and installed quantities. A route change following a finishing decision should include approval of its effect on materials and related work.
| Quantity detail | What prevents disagreement |
|---|---|
| Linear metre | Route length for the paired lines, or individual pipe length? |
| Rate inclusions | Explicitly listed supply, installation, insulation and accessories |
| Additional work | Measured quantity, reason for change and approved rate |
Distinguish installed route quantity from purchased material quantity. If the quotation includes wastage or spare material, ask how it is calculated instead of silently including it in the route length. Unconfirmed dimensions and lengths should remain identified as unspecified until measured or approved, rather than being presented as final quantities.
Questions & acceptance checklist
- Record both equipment model numbers.
- Specify both refrigerant lines and their insulation.
- Agree the linear-metre measurement rule.
- Keep route photographs and handover documents.
Before you decide
Is there one pipe size for every split AC?
No. Use the requirements for the actual model and installation route.
Does the country of origin settle the quality question?
No. Check the product specification, equipment suitability and installation scope together.
Does a piping rate automatically include cables and drainage?
No. The quotation should state those inclusions or exclusions explicitly before approval.
