Moisture-Resistant Kitchen Cabinets: Check the Product and Scope

Choose kitchen cabinet materials through product information and detailed joinery requirements, then compare quotations on the same measured scope.

Illustrative scenario: a worktop looks sound across most of its face, yet swelling develops beside a repeatedly wet sink joint. This example illustrates a possible weak point; it does not diagnose all swelling or claim a customer case.

Humidity, occasional spills and continuing leakage are different exposures. Choose a documented product and assembly for the actual conditions rather than relying on a broad “water-resistant wood” description.

THE KEY IDEA

Specify the full assembly and resolve recurring water at its source.

01

Read the specific product classification

MEDITE explicitly states that MEDITE MR is moisture-resistant MDF for humid interiors, not waterproof board, and that wetting should be avoided. This describes that product; other boards require their own documentation. The manufacturer also explains that green dye identifies its product rather than creating its performance.

02

Review the water-entry locations

EGGER’s worktop guidance addresses protection of cut edges, openings and joints. Use the sealing products and details required by the selected worktop system, rather than assuming one general-purpose sealant suits every assembly.

Sink and tapCut-out protection and appliance requirements
Worktop jointJoint detail and liquid-entry protection
Exposed edgesComplete, compatible edge treatment
Sink cabinetLeak source and inspection access
AppliancesProduct-specific heat, steam and ventilation needs
03

Repair the source before the appearance

If swelling appears, record where moisture recurs and inspect nearby plumbing and appliances. Do not assume the board alone caused the problem. Nor should a new edge strip be treated as a repair for every damaged core. Inspection must determine which parts can be retained.

Challenge unlimited waterproofing claims by asking for product evidence, intended exposure and care instructions. A material name does not establish the terms of a supplier’s warranty.

04

Specify the complete kitchen

List carcasses, doors, backs, shelves, faces, edges, hardware and worktops separately. Identify who handles plumbing and appliance connections. This makes supply-only and installed quotations easier to distinguish.

At handover, retain product information and care requirements. Remove standing spills promptly and investigate recurring leaks. Maintenance supports a suitable assembly; it cannot correct an unsuitable specification or defective joint.

What does a kitchen price per linear metre include?

Request a numbered cabinet drawing and a written definition of the linear-metre calculation. Do not assume that every supplier combines wall and base cabinets in the same way, or uses matching heights, depths and accessories. Islands and tall units should have visible quantities and descriptions rather than disappearing into one total.

GroupConfirm before comparison
CabinetsLength, height, depth and specification
WorktopMeasurement basis and included openings
AccessoriesType, quantity and installation scope

Separate worktops, appliance openings, sinks and specialist accessories where they are priced independently. State who supplies and installs each element. For cabinets near water, review the chosen product and assembly requirements rather than relying on a market label. Link the quotation to the approved drawing and sample, and record the effect of changes before production. The resulting schedule supports a direct comparison and gives the receiving team something specific to check.

  • Accessible plumbing inspection points.
  • Care and maintenance instructions.

Before you decide

Is green MDF waterproof?

Colour alone proves no rating. Check the specific product’s technical information.

Can silicone make any cabinet waterproof?

No. A compatible sealant is one part of a suitable detail; it does not redefine the core’s limitations.

Does one swollen edge mean replacing the kitchen?

Not necessarily. Assess the cause, extent and replaceable components before defining the repair scope.
